Desperately Seeking Funding Susan? Read this and weep…

Ouch. I came across this Harvard Business Review article the other day by a group of Swedish researchers (Malmstrom, Johansson and Wincent) – they recorded Venture Capitalists’ (VC) conversations and analysed how differently the VCs spoke about male and female entrepreneurs. It’s uncomfortable reading…the language these VC guys used (and yes, no question, it will usually be guys) to describe male and females was radically different. (When writing this I accidentally wrote “tragically” instead of “radically” at first. Freudian slip? Maybe…but then maybe tragic is the right word.) The research showed that the VCs produced typical stereotypes of women as…

Got a complaint? Go to the top…right to the very, very top!

Got a complaint? Go to the top…right to the very, very top!

I quite like being feisty. I’m a master ¬†– or mistress! – complainer and not ashamed to say so. A skill learned fairly early on in my entrepreneurial career and honed over many years, but I confess it took me time to learn how to complain properly. For so long I just used to whine and moan, talking to everyone else about a problem – everyone apart from the people that could actually do something about the issue – getting angrier and more aggrieved by the minute. More moaning, more whining, and no resolution. Then one day something happened in…

Expect Problems and Eat Them For Breakfast

Expect Problems and Eat Them For Breakfast

Problems, problems, problems. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it seems like there is a nearby Problem Volcano, spewing forth molten problems every single minute of every single day. Deal with one, and another one pops up right away, probably even worse than the one before… It can be really demoralising for a new entrepreneur. Why isn’t this working? What am I doing wrong? What’s wrong with me? And it gets even worse when you start comparing yourself to others, for whom everything just seems to be going right all the time (BTW, it’s not, they will be having…

If you don’t ask, you don’t get

If you don’t ask, you don’t get

I was running a course recently¬†on governance for female entrepreneurs. Yes, I know governance sounds deadly dull, and it’s the last thing on your mind when you are starting up your business – there are so many other exciting and interesting things to do – but trust me, it’s not boring…and it is sooooooo important…more of that another day however. On the course we talked a lot about the benefits of building a board for your company – experience, skills, contacts, credibility, and governance, to name but a few – and how to build a board. By critically assessing your…

Address by President Barack Obama

Address by President Barack Obama

Well that was a pretty special evening last night…listening to President¬†Barack Obama (once a President, always a President, I now know…) at the EIC in Edinburgh, Scotland, What an inspiration. Such gravitas, dignity and charisma. Key takeaway…politics is imperfect but we are all just doing the best that we can. As in politics, so in life in general. Nothing is ever perfect, but if we all just keep trying to do a little better than the day before, and focusing on bettering ourselves, rather then comparing ourselves to others, you know what…that will be a pretty darned good definition of…

Royal Bank of Scotland Skills and Opportunities Fund 2017

Royal Bank of Scotland Skills and Opportunities Fund 2017

This is a great initiative from Royal Bank of Scotland! I am delighted that Women’s Enterprise Scotland has been shortlised for funding from the RBS Skills and Opportunities Fund 2017. We are proposing to deliver two business creation courses for women in and around the Blairgowrie and Rattray area. Women as a group face notable economic challenges, and rural-based women, including older women, young women and migrants, face additional employability barriers. To gain funding we need to be successful in the public vote which is now open and runs until midday on 5th May. Please support us by clicking on…

Fearless Girl Stands Up For Gender Balance

Fearless Girl Stands Up For Gender Balance

Great article by my friend and Women’s Enterprise Scotland board member, broadcaster¬†Clare English… “We rarely see images of strong women standing up for themselves so the past few days have reminded us that there is a quiet strength that resides in us all ( men and women). ¬†For women looking at Saffiyah Khan‚Äôs smiling countenance in the face of hostility or the slight bronze figure of the Fearless Girl, there‚Äôs inspiration because both women are not intimidated by a threat.¬† A simple¬† smile¬† can have weapons grade power, disarming the most ferocious¬† verbal attacks . A small girl, standing defiantly…

Dream Big and Dare to Fail

Dream Big and Dare to Fail

It’s January – a new year and a new start – full of hope and promise and resolutions to do more and be better. The vast majority of people have already broken the resolutions they made to themselves on January¬†1st. Not me though…and before you think that sounds more than a little pompous, that’s ¬†because I don’t¬†start with resolutions until the day I come back to work. Too much partying¬†still left to do (I am Scottish after all, and my birthday is on Hogmanay!).¬†So, an hour in on the first day of ¬†keeping my resolutions and I am doing pretty…

Sorry, but I just think…

Sorry, but I just think…

I have been thinking a lot recently about confidence and how females portray themselves in business. It’s often said¬†(usually by men!) we lack confidence. But that’s not true at all…women are generally very confident in their roles…we don’t shout about it as much as men though! We keep our heads down and get on with the task in hand, hoping that our good work will be recognised someday… But sometimes we can appear to be indecisive and lack confidence…and that’s quite a different thing altogether. Have a look at the emails you send – how often do you apologise,…
