Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appointed to G20 T20 Think Tank

Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appointed to G20 T20 Think Tank

Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES) has been appointed to the G20’s ‘ideas bank’, Think20 (T20) to advise on the organisation’s Gender Economic Equity workstream. We are the only Scottish organisation to be working with the T20 and representatives from WES will attend the T20 summit in Buenos Aires in September. The T20 provides research-based policy advice  to help the G20 deliver concrete and sustainable policy measures. WES is contributing to the T20 Gender Economic Equity workstream and sharing best practice insights from the ground breaking work we have delivered here in Scotland. The work delivered by WES continues to attract international…

Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appoints First Male Ambassador

Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appoints First Male Ambassador

Delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Logan, former COO of Skyscanner and technology entrepreneur and investor, as the first male ambassador for Women’s Enterprise Scotland. We are thrilled that Mark has joined our campaign and together we will work to encourage more male entrepreneurs to join the ranks and end what Mark describes as “an outright aberration.” Mark says, “The gender imbalance in enterprise and especially in the tech sector where I specialise, should be treated as an outright aberration in our society. It severely limits both individual opportunity and the country’s economic progress. In addressing that imbalance, I believe…

Desperately Seeking Funding Susan? Read this and weep…

Ouch. I came across this Harvard Business Review article the other day by a group of Swedish researchers (Malmstrom, Johansson and Wincent) – they recorded Venture Capitalists’ (VC) conversations and analysed how differently the VCs spoke about male and female entrepreneurs. It’s uncomfortable reading…the language these VC guys used (and yes, no question, it will usually be guys) to describe male and females was radically different. (When writing this I accidentally wrote “tragically” instead of “radically” at first. Freudian slip? Maybe…but then maybe tragic is the right word.) The research showed that the VCs produced typical stereotypes of women as…

Address by President Barack Obama

Address by President Barack Obama

Well that was a pretty special evening last night…listening to President Barack Obama (once a President, always a President, I now know…) at the EIC in Edinburgh, Scotland, What an inspiration. Such gravitas, dignity and charisma. Key takeaway…politics is imperfect but we are all just doing the best that we can. As in politics, so in life in general. Nothing is ever perfect, but if we all just keep trying to do a little better than the day before, and focusing on bettering ourselves, rather then comparing ourselves to others, you know what…that will be a pretty darned good definition of…

Fearless Girl Stands Up For Gender Balance

Fearless Girl Stands Up For Gender Balance

Great article by my friend and Women’s Enterprise Scotland board member, broadcaster Clare English… “We rarely see images of strong women standing up for themselves so the past few days have reminded us that there is a quiet strength that resides in us all ( men and women).  For women looking at Saffiyah Khan’s smiling countenance in the face of hostility or the slight bronze figure of the Fearless Girl, there’s inspiration because both women are not intimidated by a threat.  A simple  smile  can have weapons grade power, disarming the most ferocious  verbal attacks . A small girl, standing defiantly…

The Business Case for Women’s Empowerment

The Business Case for Women’s Empowerment

“The moral case for greater gender equity is clear, and so is the economic case” Christine Lagarde, IMF On International Women’s Day 2017, I just had to share this fantastic article from Christine Lagarde, MD at the International Monetary Fund. Read on… “Over the past few decades, women around the world have been pushing boundaries on areas like educational achievement, political representation, and economic participation—yet, gender gaps remain. Globally, just 55 percent of women participate in the labor force, compared with 80 percent of men—and women are only now earning what men did a decade ago. As countries around the…
