Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appoints First Male Ambassador

Women’s Enterprise Scotland Appoints First Male Ambassador

Delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Logan, former COO of Skyscanner and technology entrepreneur and investor, as the first male ambassador for Women’s Enterprise Scotland. We are thrilled that Mark has joined our campaign and together we will work to encourage more male entrepreneurs to join the ranks and end what Mark describes as “an outright aberration.” Mark says, “The gender imbalance in enterprise and especially in the tech sector where I specialise, should be treated as an outright aberration in our society. It severely limits both individual opportunity and the country’s economic progress. In addressing that imbalance, I believe…

Desperately Seeking Funding Susan? Read this and weep…

Ouch. I came across this Harvard Business Review article the other day by a group of Swedish researchers (Malmstrom, Johansson and Wincent) – they recorded Venture Capitalists’ (VC) conversations and analysed how differently the VCs spoke about male and female entrepreneurs. It’s uncomfortable reading…the language these VC guys used (and yes, no question, it will usually be guys) to describe male and females was radically different. (When writing this I accidentally wrote “tragically” instead of “radically” at first. Freudian slip? Maybe…but then maybe tragic is the right word.) The research showed that the VCs produced typical stereotypes of women as…

Truck Files

Truck Files

I was speaking at a start up event this week and was asked what are my three key takeaways for entrepreneurs to think about as they start up and grow their businesses. In short: learn to sell, ask for help, and self care. A business with no sales is not a business (or at least it is a very precarious business)…ask for help because you simply can’t embark on this journey and be successful without some help along the way…and self-care because you need to look after you in this entire process – put your own oxygen mask on first…

Got a complaint? Go to the top…right to the very, very top!

Got a complaint? Go to the top…right to the very, very top!

I quite like being feisty. I’m a master  – or mistress! – complainer and not ashamed to say so. A skill learned fairly early on in my entrepreneurial career and honed over many years, but I confess it took me time to learn how to complain properly. For so long I just used to whine and moan, talking to everyone else about a problem – everyone apart from the people that could actually do something about the issue – getting angrier and more aggrieved by the minute. More moaning, more whining, and no resolution. Then one day something happened in…

Expect Problems and Eat Them For Breakfast

Expect Problems and Eat Them For Breakfast

Problems, problems, problems. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it seems like there is a nearby Problem Volcano, spewing forth molten problems every single minute of every single day. Deal with one, and another one pops up right away, probably even worse than the one before… It can be really demoralising for a new entrepreneur. Why isn’t this working? What am I doing wrong? What’s wrong with me? And it gets even worse when you start comparing yourself to others, for whom everything just seems to be going right all the time (BTW, it’s not, they will be having…

Dream Big and Dare to Fail

Dream Big and Dare to Fail

It’s January – a new year and a new start – full of hope and promise and resolutions to do more and be better. The vast majority of people have already broken the resolutions they made to themselves on January 1st. Not me though…and before you think that sounds more than a little pompous, that’s  because I don’t start with resolutions until the day I come back to work. Too much partying still left to do (I am Scottish after all, and my birthday is on Hogmanay!). So, an hour in on the first day of  keeping my resolutions and I am doing pretty…

Business Plan – A Necessary Evil

Business Plan – A Necessary Evil

Over the past few months I have been doing a lot of business planning work for technology companies looking to raise finance. Lots of research, lots of analysis (and paralysis), lots of decisions…and lots of stress. Here’s the only thing that you really need to know about business plans. And that is, that as soon as you have done them, THEY ARE WRONG!!! A business plan is just that – a plan. It’s not a promise, it’s not definitive, it’s not set in tablets of stone, it’s not something that you will achieve no matter what. It’s a well-researched plan of action, based on the best…

Business Insider Special Report – Women in Business

Business Insider Special Report – Women in Business

Business Insider did a great report in their October edition all about Women in Business in Scotland. Here’s what I had to say in the report: “Lynne Cadenhead, a serial entrepreneur and chair of Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES), says different people need different kinds of support at various stages in their career. The key to development is to provide what is “appropriate for a person at that point in their journey”. That said, there are widely recognised differences in how women and men handle management duties. Women tend to collaborate, which to men can come across as a sign of…

Six Figure Boost To Help Close Gender Enterprise Gap in Scotland

Six Figure Boost To Help Close Gender Enterprise Gap in Scotland

A proud day for me this week in my role as Chair of Women’s Enterprise Scotland (WES). Two days training with our wonderful WES Ambassadors, a visit from Jamie Hepburn MSP to announce a major funding boost to help female entrepreneurs in Scotland, and a trip to Scottish Parliament to kick off our newly-founded Cross Party Group on Women in Enterprise. Only 21% of Scotland’s SMEs are majority led by women and men are twice as likely as women to start a business. But if women started up businesses at the same rate as men, we would contribute an additional £7.6…

Sorry, but I just think…

Sorry, but I just think…

I have been thinking a lot recently about confidence and how females portray themselves in business. It’s often said (usually by men!) we lack confidence. But that’s not true at all…women are generally very confident in their roles…we don’t shout about it as much as men though! We keep our heads down and get on with the task in hand, hoping that our good work will be recognised someday… But sometimes we can appear to be indecisive and lack confidence…and that’s quite a different thing altogether. Have a look at the emails you send – how often do you apologise,…
